Akwa United Chairman Paul Bassey
asked his players not to underrate their guests Ikorodu United in a rescheduled
Premier League game. The players played accordingly and defeated the Lagos team
3-0 in the match played on Wednesday.
The win means that Akwa have
maintained their unbeaten run this season at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, in
Uyo. It was the first time Akwa United coach, Maurice Cooreman, who managed
Ikorodu last season in the lower division faced his former club. Ikorodu United
and another Lagos team, MFM, are in their first season in the top flight
division.
Akwa opened scoring through
Ubong Ekpai with just barely 10 minutes into the game. They went two goals up
five minutes after the break when Harrison Ibukun converted from the penalty
spot after Friday Ubong was brought down in the box.
Thee visitors struggled to get
going in the game, and they came close to grabbing an equaliser through
Abdullahi Fatai who saw his well struck free kick hit the crossbar two minutes
before the break.
Cyril Olisemah compounded the
woes of his former club when he added the third in the 60th minute.
